Vaginal Yeast Infection Drugstore Products

Drugstore Products Used For Vaginal Yeast Infection

Our home remedies will take care of most vaginal yeast infections, however, sometimes stronger treatment is needed. A visit to your local drugstore will turn up a number of commercial products that are sold 'over-the-counter' or OTC, that is, without a doctor's prescription.

Each over-the-counter fungicide is listed here with the product name and its active ingredient: Monistat-1 with active ingredient tioconazole Monistat-3 also with tioconazole (3-day treatment) Femstat or Mycelex with butoconazole Monistat-7 with miconazole Mycelex or Gyne-Lotrimin both with chlotrimazole

All of the above medications are considered anti-fungals because the are designed to attack and kill the candida (yeast) fungus. Those of us who prefer the natural health philosophy have a problem with this approach, namely that you are NOT dealing with the root cause of your health problem.

Most likely the reason that you have a vaginal yeast infection is because you are missing vital healthy bacteria in your system. Isn't it better to deal with the source instead of the symptom? We think so and therefore recommend that most people begin their yeast infection treatment by trying yogurt and/or probiotics first.

However, thousands of women use these products ... and they do go to work quickly in attacking the yeast infection. But this site is all about giving YOU the information you need to make you own health choices.

So ... are there any reasons you would NOT want to use an anti-fungal? Consider these:
Adverse Side Effects Allergic Reactions Latex Breakdown Cost

Not all people respond the same to any medicine. A treatment that works okay for the majority of people may cause problems in some individuals. One report listed butoconazole, the active ingredient in both Femstat and Mycelex, as one of the top ten drugs reported to the US FDA in causing adverse reactions.

This may be another case where "the cure is worse than the disease". Allergic reaction to miconazole (active ingredient of Monistat-7) is fairly common and can cause a great deal of discomfort as you may now have an allergic rash on top of your yeast rash! Product literature for one product reminds patients to "tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to any of the azoles" ... referring to the family of drugs of which the yeast anti-fungals are a part.

You should carefully read all literature that comes with any product for treating vaginal yeast infection to make sure you understand the side effects before using it. Also, an on-line search of both the product name and active ingredient should lead you to information on known side effects.

Buyer beware!
The anti-fungals have also been shown to breakdown latex. Yep! That's the same material used in condoms and diaphragms. To quote from one product's documentation:

"If you use latex or rubber birth control devices (condoms, diaphragms, or cervical caps), you should wait 3 days after treatment with azole antifungal agents before using them again . Many brands of vaginal azoles contain oils in the product that can weaken these devices. This increases the chances of a condom breaking during sexual intercourse. The rubber in cervical caps or diaphragms may break down faster and wear out sooner. ..."

Most of products for vaginal yeast infection sell for about $15 to $20. Not terribly expensive ... about the same investment you'd make for a 30-day supply of an acidophilus or probiotic supplement.
You can find them a bit cheaper on-line but don't forget to add shipping costs .. and you'll have a few days delay wait for the shipment.

How do you cure a male yeast infection?

I know of vinegar, garlic cloves, cranberry juice and yogurt, being able to help cure. I'm going for the more natural remedies, rather than drugs. Is there anything I'm missing? I also know about wearing loose clothes that aren't damp.

Any help is appreciated!

Vaginal Yeast Infections – Topic

Vaginal Yeast Infections

Other problems (like bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis) can cause vaginal symptoms that may seem like a yeast infection. If you need help finding out which problem you have, see the Check Your Symptoms section of the topic Female Genital Problems.

Yeast is a fungus that normally lives in the vagina in small numbers. A vaginal yeast infection means that too many yeast cells are growing in the vagina . These infections are very common. Although they can bother you a lot, they are not usually serious. And treatment is simple.

Most yeast infections are caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans.

A healthy vagina has many bacteria and a small number of yeast cells. The most common bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus, help keep other organisms-like the yeast-under control.

When something happens to change the balance of these organisms, yeast can grow too much and cause symptoms. Taking antibiotics sometimes causes this imbalance. The high estrogen levels caused by pregnancy or hormone replacement therapy can also cause it. So can certain health problems, like diabetes or HIVinfection.

A yeast infection causes itching or soreness in the vagina and sometimes causes pain or burning when you urinate or have sex. Some women also have a thick, clumpy, white discharge that has no odor and looks a little like cottage cheese.

These symptoms are more likely to occur during the week before your menstrual period.

It?s easy to guess wrong about a vaginal infection. See your doctor if you aren’t sure what you have or if this is the first time you have had these symptoms. Also see your doctor if you are pregnant. Your doctor may want to do a vaginal exam.

If you have had a yeast infection before and can recognize the symptoms, and you aren’t pregnant, you can treat yourself at home with medicines you can buy without a prescription. You can use an antifungal cream, or a suppository that you put into your vagina, or antifungal tablets that you swallow.

If your symptoms are mild, you may want to wait to see if they clear up on their own.

Yeast infections are common during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, don’t use medicine for a yeast infection without talking to your doctor first.

If you use a cream or suppository to treat the infection, don’t depend on a condomor diaphragm for birth control. The oil in some medicines weakens latex, the material often used to make these devices.

Many women have infections that come back. If you have more than four yeast infections in a year, see your doctor. He or she may do some tests to see if your yeast infections are being caused by another health problem, such as diabetes.

If you practice good genital hygiene, you can help prevent infection.
Keep your vaginal area clean. Use mild, unscented soap and water. Rinse well. After using the toilet, wipe from front to back to avoid spreading yeast or bacteria from your anus to the vagina or urinary tract.Wear underwear that helps keep your genital area dry and doesn?t hold in warmth and moisture. One good choice is cotton underwear.Avoid tight-fitting clothing, such as panty hose, and tight-fitting jeans. These may increase body heat and moisture in your genital area.Change out of a wet swimsuit right away. Wearing a wet swimsuit for many hours may keep your genital area warm and moist.Change pads or tampons often.Don?t douche or use deodorant tampons or feminine sprays, powders, or perfumes. These items can change the normal balance of organisms in your vagina.

Pinpointing Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

Vaginal yeast infection is also referred to as candidiasis. It is a fungal infection brought about by a number of species of Candida, of which Candida Albicans is the most common type. This fungus is usually present on normal human skin and in areas that are generally warm and moist. Under certain conditions, a change in their environment causes them to increase in quantity beyond normal, causing infection. There are, however, ways which may help you properly identify vaginal yeast infection symptoms.
Not so normal sensations
The easiest way for a woman to make out if she has yeast infection is that she itches severely in and around her vaginal area. The itching may not be present at all times. But when it does, it itches a lot so badly she finds it difficult to walk. It may also be accompanied by a burning sensation or be generally painful for her to urinate.
Separating the issues
One good way to make a distinction of the burning sensation that is due to a yeast infection and a urinary tract infection is to take notice when exactly the burning occurs. If the burning sensation is felt when the urine reaches outside, then she is most likely having yeast infection. This is due to the acidic, coming into contact with the irritated of the vulva. Urinary tract infection, on the other hand, causes a burning sensation as the urine passes through the urinary tract on its way out.
A contained redness
Another yeast infection sign is the slight redness localized in the vaginal and vulvar areas. Soreness and irritation of the said areas are also present, which makes it for the woman to experience pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse.
As mentioned earlier, Candida is normally present in the skin and in most areas of the body that are warm and moist. This means that signs and symptoms of candidiasis may also appear in different areas of the body in many different ways.
A nasty clump of white stuff
Most women bracket together a thick discharge that looks like cottage cheese with vaginal yeast infection. However, not everyone gets a discharge. In fact, only about 20% of infected women experience it. The discharge may have a starchy odor to it – something that resembles the smell of bread or beer – or sometimes none at all. Its consistency may typically range from thick and not clumpy at all, faint yellow to white, and to thin and clear.
Since not everyone who has vaginal yeast infection gets a discharge, still the best and easiest way for a woman to tell whether or not she is experiencing yeast infection symptoms is that she itches in and around the vaginal area.
Aside from the vaginal infection
Oral candidiasis, or oral thrush, is characterized by white, lacy patches that can form on the palate, tongue, or elsewhere in the oral cavity. These patches sometimes appear resembling curdled milk. Candidiasis may also appear as red flat rashes with scalloped edges in diaper areas and skin folds. Satellite lesions – smaller patches of rashes nearby – usually are also present, which may cause itching and pain in the area. Male yeast infection, although less common, include symptoms such as red patch sores of the glans penis and the foreskin.
There will be some differences to its vaginal yeast infection symptoms counterpart, but for the most part they are similar. In people with weakened immune system, candidal infection may also affect the esophagus and the stomach.

Yeast vs. Vaginal Infection?

What are the symptoms of a yeast infection and a vaginal infection??

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

drs always reccommend that you be tested for a yeast infection if you've never had one before you treat it. after you've had one you know what is is if symptoms recur. so if you've never had one, go to a doc. there are other STD's that have many similar symptoms but won't go away by themselves or without prescription drugs.

Facing the Facts of Vaginal Yeast Infection

Vaginal yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a brought about by the abnormal increase in the number of species of Candida, of which Candida Albicans is the most common culprit. A type of fungus, Candida Albicans is normally present on the human skin and in various areas of the body where it is generally warm and moist.

Under a variety of conditions, a change in the environment where they live in causes them to increase in quantity beyond normal, causing the infection. Among the signs and symptoms of vaginal infection include: itching, burning and painful sensation in the vaginal area; redness and soreness in the affected region; a noticeable discharge. Encountering these may help you properly identify the signs and symptoms of vaginal yeast infection.
Itching, burning and painful sensation
For some women, the easiest way to identify if she is suffering from vaginal yeast infection is that she itches severely in and around the vaginal area. The itching may not be present at all times. But when it does, it itches so badly a lot she finds it difficult to perform normal daily activities, such as to ambulate.

Urination may also go together with a burning sensation, or be generally painful for her to do so. But this bothersome urination may also be present with other forms of infections, such as urinary tract infection (UTI). One good way to tell apart the burning sensation that is caused by a yeast infection from that which is caused by a urinary tract infection is to notice when exactly the sensation is experienced. The urine is acidic in nature. So if the burning sensation is felt when the urine reaches outside, then it is most likely brought about by a yeast infection. Urinary tract infection, on the other hand, causes a burning sensation as the urine passes through the urinary tract on its way out.

Redness and soreness in the affected region
A slight to severe redness localized in the vaginal and vulvar areas is another sign of yeast infection. Soreness and irritation of the said areas may also be presenting symptoms, which make sexual intercourse an extremely painful experience for the woman.

Unusual seepage down there
Most women associate a thick discharge that somewhat resembles cottage cheese with vaginal yeast infection. Its consistency may typically range from thick and not clumpy at all, faint yellow to white, and to thin and clear. The discharge may or may not have a starchy odor to it, something that resembles the smell of bread or beer. Yeast, by the way, is used in making bread as a leavening agent, and in the fermentation of beer.
Since not everyone who has vaginal yeast infection gets a discharge, still the best and easiest way for a woman to tell whether or not she is experiencing yeast infection symptoms is that she itches in and around the vaginal area.

Yeast infection in other body parts
As mentioned earlier, Candida is normally present in the skin and in most areas of the body that are warm and moist. This means that signs and symptoms of candidiasis may also appear in different areas of the body in many different ways.
Yeast infection may occur in the mouth, in diaper areas and skin folds. And in people with weakened immune system, such as those with AIDS, yeast infection may also affect the gastrointestinal tract, such as the esophagus and the stomach.

THE FACTS: Why a Yeast Infection Happens, Symptoms of a Yeast Infection & How to Cure it Fast

Candida is a bacterial fungus that lives in both men and women.

More specifically called Candida Albicans, this fungus thrives in the digestive tract (as well as the vagina in women) and lives in harmony with acidic bacteria called Acidophilus.

The acidophilus, being an acid regulates the Candida Albicans (a base).

When people eat certain foods like complex sugars, the Candida Albican multiply and change the balance between the Candida and Acidophilus in the body.

Suddenly, the acidophilus can no longer regulate the outnumbering Candida.
This creates what is commonly known as Candida Overgrowth or a Yeast Infection.

The symptoms (you may not experience all of them):
    - white cottage cheese-like discharge
    - some odor
    - dryness (can cause bleeding)
    - digestive problems
    - itchiness
    - burning urination
    - painful intercourse
    - a feeling of just not being "normal"

Here are some safe, natural cures you can implement.

    - avoid scented soaps
    - avoid sugars and complex carbs for a week
    - air out the infected area while you're sleeping at night
    - add grapefruit extract to your water during the day (balances hormones)
    - eat probiotics like cottage cheese and yogurt
    - shower frequently
-drink lots of water and eat plenty of fiber to flush the infection
